September 16, 2002 - President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Visits APHCV
LOS ANGELES – APHCV hosted a site visit from the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Monday, September 16.
“We are honored and pleased to host this visit from the President’s Commission and DHHS,” said Board President Kei Kokubun, who was on hand to officially welcome the group on behalf of APHCV.
The Commission, initially established by Executive Order under President Clinton, was created to “increase opportunities and improve the quality of life for the underserved populations in the AAPI communities.” Many Asian Pacific Islander communities nationwide advocated for the creation of this commission, according to Kazue Shibata, Executive Director of APHCV.
This visit was part of a series of site visits Commission members have been conducting across the country to gather information and input from AAPI communities as it formulates its recommendations to the President.
Commission members were joined by Christopher McCabe, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in celebrating the recent competitive grant of $425,000.00 that APHCV received to create a full-time school-based clinic at John Marshall High School in Los Feliz.
McCabe recognized and thanked APHCV for the work it is doing to provide health care access to low-income, uninsured and monolingual people in Los Angeles.
After touring the agency and learning more about its services, Commission Chair Dr. John B. Tsu also recognized APHCV. “We are very impressed with the good work you are doing,” he said.
