Healthy Families Transition to Medi-Cal

On January 1, California began the transition of children in the Healthy Families Program to the Medi-Cal Program.  As part of his 2012-13 budget proposal, Governor Jerry Brown obtained federal approval to shift 875,000 Healthy Families members to the Medi-Cal Program in four phases throughout 2013. In Los Angeles County, children enrolled in Healthy Families began their transition in March 1.

Children transitioning in the Medi-Cal program are offered more benefits than the Healthy Families program. While payment rates are lower in the Medi-Cal program, some families may need to choose a new physician if their current primary care provider does not accept their new Medi-Cal insurance. The Department of Health Care Services recently reported that many transitioned children did not switch primary care providers and 99% of them remained with their same health plan.

If you or someone you know needs assistance with their transition from Healthy Families to Medi-Cal or would like more information about how to receive low-cost health care please call APHCV at (323) 644-3882.
